Sampling of San Gabriel Valley Area Summer Programs

Alhambra

Movies and free lunch will be provided at Granada, Alhambra, and Almansor parks. Free arts and crafts will be offered each Tuesday and Thursday. A two-week Golden Bear Day Camp with daily field trips will be available to children ages 6 to 11. The cost is $80 for each two-week session. Other activities include swimming, sports and games. Arcadia

The city will sponsor free, supervised events at local playgrounds. Call (818) 574-5432.

The Los Angeles State and County Arboretum, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., offers children 7 to 12 the chance to become junior botanists. The children will be allowed to explore the gardens and learn about plant life. The cost is $58. Call (818) 446-8251, ext. 49.

Azusa

The city will sponsor various classes for youths and adults. A day camp program will offer weekly trips to the library, pool, bowling alley, skating rinks, beaches and Magic Mountain. Call (818) 334-2611.

Baldwin Park

Jazz, tap, ballet and Spanish are among the many classes the city will offer. Tennis and baton classes are also scheduled, along with T-ball for 5-, 6- and 7-year-olds. For information about swimming lessons, call (818) 960-9898. Starting July 5, a free summer playground program with games, arts and crafts will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (818) 813-5245.

Claremont

A day program for grades kindergarten through sixth will be offered for $63 weekly. The activities include roller-skating, bowling, movies, beach and park trips. There are no free programs. For additional information, call (714) 399-5494.

Covina

The city will sponsor day care and day camp for students from grades first to sixth, and a special program from noon to 6 p.m. for students in summer school. Other programs for all ages will be held at Cedar Grove Elementary, Glen Oak Elementary and Grove Center Elementary schools. Activities will include excursions, swimming, special events, and classes in art, cheerleading, first aid and dance, including jazz, tap and ballet. For children 7 to 10, "Sugar and Spice" charm class will be offered.

Duarte

El Monte

Classes in swimming, ballet, tap, cheerleading and drill, art, fashion and aerobics will be held at the community center, parks, and library. For free activities at local parks, call (818) 580-2200.

Glendora

Six- and eight-week classes in piano, magic, charm and modeling and a theater workshop will be held at city parks and schools. A nature camp also is planned. Prices vary. Call (818) 914-8228.

Irwindale

A free day camp for 7- to 12-year-olds will be offered each Tuesday. Also, on Thursdays, there will be free beach trips for teen-agers. There is a fee for outings, such as fishing trips and Dodgers games. A July 4 celebration will be held at Irwindale Park, 5050 Irwindale Ave. The Irwindale Park pool will offer recreational swimming on Saturdays and Sundays. La Puente

Day camp is offered for $50 a week; $25 for half-days. Free arts and crafts and sports will be held at local schools from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. There is a fee for field trips. Call (818) 968-4224.

La Verne

Classes, including karate and dance, will be offered at the community center and various other city locations. A summer T-ball league is also scheduled. Aquatic sports will be offered at the city pool. Call (714) 596-8700.

Monrovia

Swimming classes for infants, beginners and advanced beginners will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Monrovia Swim Center, 845 W. Colorado Blvd. The fee per resident is $16. For information on evening lessons and recreational swim hours, call (818) 357-5046.

Monterey Park

Free games, sports and arts and crafts will be held at various city locations. Swimming lessons will be offered for all ages. Day camp is available for children 6 to 14 for $55 per week. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., free recreational activities will he held at city playgrounds. Call (818) 307-1388.

Pasadena

The city will sponsor 45 different classes and five day camps throughout the summer, including 40 swimming classes for people from ages 4 to adult. For more information, call (818) 798-0865.

Beginning Tuesday, Kidspace Children's Museum, 390 S. Molino Ave., will open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. With a $3.25 admission price, children will be allowed to attend workshops in ocean adventure, crystal gardens, Indian sand painting and Korean fan-making.
