WORLD IN BRIEF : HAITI : Strikers Protest 2 Ex-Aides' Return

July 12, 1990|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The capital of Haiti was paralyzed by a protest strike over the return from exile of two former officials linked to human rights abuses under previous dictatorial regimes. The one-day strike in Port-au-Prince was supported by political groups, labor unions and many civic groups demanding the arrest of Roger Lafontant and Williams Regala. Lafontant reputedly headed the dreaded Tonton Macoutes. Regala is regarded as the mastermind of the 1989 election-day massacre of 34 voters.
