Downey — A luncheon for local businessmen raised $8,800 for the Downey Police Department's Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, according to Chris Pelonis, a Downey businessman and luncheon host. The funds will be used for purchasing classroom supplies and other DARE materials.
The city budgets funds for salaries for two police officers working in the DARE program. All other expenses for the program are met through contributions form the community. Police Chief D. Clayton Mayes said. The luncheon was held June 11 at Chris & Pitts restaurant on Lakewood Boulevard and Gallatin Road.
