L.B. Murders Double, Crimes Against People Rise by 28%

LONG BEACH — The number of murders doubled and the overall number of crimes against people increased by 28% during the second quarter of this year, compared to figures from the same time period last year, according to police statistics released last week.

However, overall crime decreased by 2.8% from April 1 to June 30, compared to the same 1989 period, police said.

According to police statistics, the number of murders increased by 100%, from 12 during last year's second quarter to 24 this year; the number of aggravated assaults increased by 31%, from 714 to 936; robberies increased by 25%, from 801 to 1,002, and rapes increased by 16.6%, from 60 to 70.
