NAMES IN THE NEWS : Tabloid Fights Maples' Lawsuit

August 17, 1990| From Times Wire Services

ROME, Ga. — The National Enquirer has asked a federal judge to dismiss a $12-million lawsuit filed by the father of actress-model Marla Maples.

The suit, filed against the tabloid by Stan Maples, is seeking damages for defamation, invasion of privacy and commercial appropriation as a result of an April 10 Enquirer article about his daughter's relationship with New York developer Donald Trump.

In a motion filed this week in U.S. District Court in Rome, the Florida-based tabloid contends that its article did not defame Stan Maples or subject him to "public hatred, contempt or ridicule."

It said the passages cited in Maples' complaint "uniformly portray him as a concerned and supportive father."
