Movies as Art

September 02, 1990

If, Mr. Gardner, you don't like the taste your local theater appeals to, I suggest you look for one that meets your standards; there are a few still around.

In the same issue in which your letter appears, there are listings for Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" and "Orpheus"; Scorsese's "Raging Bull," and "The Band Wagon" with Fred Astaire (one Astaire dance number can surpass even your definition that "art must encompass a sense of intellect and a sense of beauty").
