Angolan rebels killed 13 people and burned 106 houses in a raid in the coastal province of Benguela, a military statement said. The statement said the U.S.-backed UNITA rebels launched the attack Tuesday about 18 miles from Caimbambo. One person died and seven others were injured on the same day when their vehicle ran over a mine 35 miles from Nzeto in the northern province of Zaire. The statement said the rebels also beat up villagers and looted property in the districts of Monanguelo and Tchicalanga in the northern Lunda province. Right-wing UNITA rebels have been fighting to overthrow Angola's leftist government for 15 years.
