Long Beach Recruiting Volunteers for Saturday Coastal Cleanup Day

September 20, 1990

LONG BEACH — In cooperation with the California Coastal Commission's sixth Coastweeks celebration, the Long Beach Parks and Recreation Department is recruiting individual and group volunteers to participate in the annual Adopt-a-Beach Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday.

Every year, California Coastweeks festivities bring together families, schools, civic groups, scientists, fishermen, elected officials, environmental organizations and individuals to create and carry out activities that focus public awareness on the value of the coast. In Long Beach alone, 6.29 tons of debris was collected during the 1989 Coastal Cleanup Day.

Adopt-a-Beach Coastal Cleanup Day is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the beach maintenance yard, 4320 Olympic Plaza, next to the Belmont Plaza pool. Families, school clubs and community organizations can volunteer and participate in the event. Refreshments, certificates and mementos will be available for all participants.
