The City Council has hired James A. Biery as public works director to replace Rollie Berry, who retired in July.
Biery, 40, was given a three-year contract at an estimated $76,000 a year. For the past nine years, he has been director of public works and city engineer for Signal Hill. He has more than 17 years of experience in the field of public works, including work as a civil engineer for Los Angeles County and the cities of Seal Beach and Montclair in San Bernardino County.
Biery has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from USC and master's degrees in civil engineering and public administration from Cal State Long Beach.
