State Physical Education Test Scores For Orange County Schools : How To Read Calif. Assessment Program-physical Education Test Scores

October 15, 1990

Grade indicates grade level of students tested last spring. Other columns indicate the number of tests that students in a particular grade group passed.

The data in the chart lists the percentage of students in each grade that passed that number of tests. Thus, 25% of Orange County fifth-graders passed two of the fitness tests, and 22% passed only one test.

Students passing four of the fitness tests are considered physically fit by the state.

Ten percent of the county's fifth-graders passed none of the tests, which include pullups, sit-ups, a 1-mile run/walk and a flexibility test called the "sit-and-reach." A fifth test, which measures skin folds on a student's arms and legs, was optional.

Note: Results for the Fullerton Elementary School District were unavailable. Here is a sample of requirements to pass the California Assessment Program Physical and Health-Related Fitness Test (students must pass in at least four categories to be considered physically fit):

A 10-year-old girl must:

* Run/walk 1 mile in under 11 minutes * Register 16 to 36 millimeters of skin folds on arms and legs combined (optional test) * Reach 25 centimeters in the sit-and-reach * Do 30 sit-ups in 1 minute * Do at least one pullup

A 10-year-old boy must: * Run/walk 1 mile in under 9 minutes, 30 seconds * Register 12 to 25 millimeters of skin folds on arms and legs combined (optional) * Reach 25 centimeters in the sit-and-reach * Do 34 sit-ups in 1 minute * Do at least one pullup
