Alexis Minotis; Greek Classical Actor

Alexis Minotis, 90, a leading character actor widely acclaimed for his interpretations of classical Greek and Shakespearean roles. Minotis was married to actress Katina Paxinou, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress in the film "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in 1943. Minotis was artistic director of the Greek National Theatre from 1964 to 1967, when he and Miss Paxinou were removed by the military junta that ruled the country for seven years. She died in 1973. He got his job back when democracy was restored in 1974, but was removed again in 1981 when the Socialist Party took office. He formed an experimental theater and played leading roles in classical Greek tragedies at the ancient theater of Epidavros. In Athens on Sunday.
