For most of the 1980s, California High School would win about one football game a year and then try a new coach. Times have changed.
The Condors, in their second season under Coach Tom Tereschuk, are one of 19 Southeast/Long Beach area teams in the Southern Section Playoffs and will play at Baldwin Park on Friday night. Cal finished in second place in the Whitmont League with a 5-2 record and was 5-5 overall.
"Everybody's pretty happy here," Tereschuk said.
The high-scoring Whittier team is led by junior quarterback Larry Haney, who has thrown for 2,106 yards and 22 touchdowns. His top receivers are senior Toby Wickoff, who has caught 58 passes for 787 yards and 12 touchdowns, and junior Paul Martinez, who has caught 48 passes for 622 yards and seven TDs.
Here is the playoff schedule for Friday night, with all games starting at 7:30:
Loyola (8-2) at Jordan (5-5)
Mater Dei (5-5) vs. Poly (6-4) in Veterans Stadium, Long Beach.
Lakewood (5-5) at Bishop Amat (8-1)
Wilson (6-3-1) at Quartz Hill (8-2)
