Leonhard Stock, a surprise winner of the downhill at the Lake Placid Olympics nearly 11 years ago, scored an upset Saturday at Val D'Isere, France, winning the opening World Cup downhill race.
The 32-year-old Austrian won the 2.07-mile race in 1 minute 57.43 seconds despite starting 27th. Stock edged Franz Heinzer of Switzerland by .13 second.
