LAS VEGAS — Greg Haugen of Las Vegas, the International Boxing Federation lightweight champion during portions of 1986-1989, hammered Billy Young of Bay City, Mich., Thursday night and coasted to a 10-round unanimous decision.
Haugen, 27-3-1 with 13 knockouts, won by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93. There were no knockdowns. Young, loser of five of his past nine fights, fell to 27-5-1, with 19 knockouts.
Haugen, 137, concentrated on the body in the first five rounds, then went to the head starting in the sixth when Young's hands dropped. Haugen opened a nick on Young's right eyebrow in the sixth, and by the ninth it was a deep gash. Young weighed 136.
