PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAIDERS : Shell Has Secret for Players

December 25, 1990|CHRIS DUFRESNE

How good are the Raiders? Coach Art Shell says his players don't even know yet.

"They really don't," he said. "They know they're good, but I'm not sure this team understands how good they are. I've told them a couple times that they're a very good football team, but they just don't know how good."

That's what the playoffs are for.

Shell said he doesn't think cornerback Lionel Washington's hamstring pull will affect him into the playoffs.

"I hope not," Shell said. "Hopefully he'll be able to go this week. The trainers expect him to practice. We'll know more by then. He'll practice lightly and we'll see what happens."

Washington took himself out of last Saturday's game against the Vikings because of the injury and was replaced by rookie Garry Lewis.
