The desert resort city of Palm Springs showed its support for Operation Desert Shield by deciding to decorate city buildings with yellow ribbons until U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East return home. The ribbons, voted in by a 4-0 City Council vote, will show members of the military and their families at home that people are thinking of them, said Mayor Sonny Bono. "I've been lonely during the holidays and there's nothing lonelier," said Bono. "With signals and signs like this, it really will do a lot for the morale," said Marine Col. Paul Cook from the nearby Marine base at Twentynine Palms. Ribbons will be sold at City Hall and businesses throughout the city, with the money going to Twentynine Palms Marine Base to distribute as it sees fit, Bono said.
