More parking spaces may be required for new apartments and condominiums under an ordinance given preliminary approval by the City Council.
The ordinance would require 2 1/2 parking spaces for each unit that has up to three bedrooms. An extra parking space would be required for each additional bedroom over three. The zoning code defines a bedroom as any room that is not used as a kitchen, living room or bathroom.
The current ordinance requires only 2 1/2 parking spaces for each multiple-family unit.
Wednesday's vote to change the zoning code was 3 to 2. Councilmen Robert C. Harbicht and George W. Fasching voted against the new requirement, saying it is too strict.
A final vote is scheduled Jan. 15.
