A coalition of West Hollywood residents has announced plans to mount a recall effort against Mayor John Heilman.
The group disclosed its intentions at Monday night's City Council meeting, accusing the councilman of weakening the city's rent control law, permitting too much development and contributing to the city's poor financial health, said Rachelle Sommers Smith, a spokeswoman for the "Recall John Heilman Committee."
Heilman defended his record on the council and accused the recall group of ignoring the wishes of the city's voters.
"I have a lot of support in the city," he said. "The people calling for a recall don't want to respect the voters of this city who just recently (in April) voted to return me to office."
To qualify the recall petition for the ballot, the group must gather 4,000 signatures from registered voters in the city.
