Track record holder Takin On The Cash will be looking to take home the cash when he heads the third of three trials to the $250,000 El Primero Del Ano Derby on Saturday night at Los Alamitos. A total of 22 three-year-old colts and geldings will go to the post in the trials, with the 10 fastest qualifiers returning for the Grade I finale on Saturday, Jan. 26.
The trials will be contested as the eighth, ninth and 10 races on the program.
Takin On The Cash will go in the third trial and will face Golden State Futurity Consolation winner Little Doc Mason.
Takin On The Cash had a banner year as a 2-year-old in 1990, winning five races and $360,918. Included in those wins were victories in the Bay Meadows, Kindergarten and Dash For Cash Futurities and a track record performance in the trials to the Golden State Futurity.
The first trial will spotlight Galla Go Special, Kid O Dash and Resolutions, who all qualified for the Golden State Futurity. California Sires Cup Futurity and Governor's Cup Futurity winner Blisterin will be the odds-on choice in the second trial.
