Flags Are for Support of Troops, Not Policy

January 12, 1991

I believe Sam Earnshaw (Viewpoint, Jan. 5) is confused about the meaning of the flags on the helmets of NFL players. The flags are to represent the teams' and players' support of the American troops stationed in Saudi Arabia. They do not represent approval of U.S. presence in the Persian Gulf.

Keeping in mind that the troops in Saudi Arabia have access to the televised pro football games, it is an excellent idea of showing them that although we might not support the cause, we do commend their bravery. I applaud the NFL teams and players for demonstrating their support.
