Rapper M. C. Hammer and vocal group En Vogue today became the first recording artists to take five Soul Train Music Awards nominations.

Hammer's top-selling rap album, "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em," was nominated for male R&B/urban contemporary album of the year and best rap album.

His single "U Can't Touch This" was among the nominees in three categories: best male R&B/urban contemporary single, R&B/urban contemporary song of the year and best R&B/urban contemporary music video.

En Vogue's single "Hold On" will go against Hammer's in the music video and song categories. In addition, "Hold On" was nominated for best R&B/urban contemporary single and En Vogue's "Born To Sing" as best R&B/urban contemporary album by a group, band or duo.

En Vogue also will compete for the best R&B/urban contemporary new artist award, against Oleta Adams ("Rhythm Of Life"), Vanilla Ice ("Ice Ice Baby") and multiple-Grammy nominee Mariah Carey ("Love Takes Time").

The awards in 12 categories will be presented in a live broadcast March 12 from the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium.
