Boy, 4, Rescued From Burning Room

January 23, 1991

A 4-year-old boy was in critical condition with burns over 90% of his body after he was dramatically rescued by neighbors from his burning bedroom Tuesday, San Diego Fire officials said.

Ryan Anthony Mays of San Ysidro was taken to the UC San Diego Medical Center after he was pulled from his burning apartment by Adam Angulo, 20, a maintenance worker at the apartment building. Angulo pulled the child out of the fire through a bedroom window.

Angulo and four other people were treated for smoke inhalation, Capt. Larry Carlson of the Metro Arson Strike Team said. Other children and the boy's mother were also in the house, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the call at 8:15 a.m. at the two-story apartment building in the 4000 block of Camino De La Plaza, Carlson said.

When they arrived, several neighbors were trying to put out the fire, which authorities said was started by a child playing with a lighter.

Fire officials are not sure if Ryan or one of the other children in the house started the fire.
