THOUSAND OAKS : War Protesters Ask for More Protection

January 23, 1991|PSYCHE PASCUAL

A group of about 20 anti-war demonstrators on Tuesday asked the Thousand Oaks City Council to boost police surveillance at their protest sites.

Protesters said they have been the target of water balloons, rocks, bottles and firecrackers thrown by counterdemonstrators.

Some said sheriff's deputies failed to respond to repeated requests for police protection, despite complaints about the clashes between war protesters and the counterdemonstrators.

The council agreed to look into the problem and has asked the Sheriff's Department to report to it on Feb. 5. Some council members said they supported the need for free speech on both sides.
