Performances An Opinionated Guide

January 24, 1991|BILL LOCEY

Teena Marie (Ventura Theatre, 26 Chestnut St., Ventura, 648-1888) She's been singing since she was 8, she's gorgeous, she has a ring in her nose, and she has two first names--so tape "The Simpsons."

Spencer the Gardener (Charlie's Seaside Cafe & Restaurant, 362 California Street Mall, Ventura, 648-6688) The only Ventura appearance this month by the singing pop-rock landscaper with the happening horn section. It's going to be very crowded.

Amasa (Club Soda, 317 E. Main St., Ventura, 652-0100) It's hard-rock night at the club up the stairs. Three bucks to get in, three bucks for a beer and a zillion bucks for drunk driving. Act accordingly.

Pat, Fin & Greg (Alex's Cantina, 633 State St., Santa Barbara, 966-0032) Happening harmonies enliven a bunch of '60s oldies plus some original Tearaways tunes.

Big Drill Car, Snailface (Carnaval Club, 634 State St., Santa Barbara, 965-8422) Garage thrash comes to State Street. Don't forget those earplugs.

Irie (Charlie's) Another reggae band with a new tape--a lot of that going around.

The Tearaways (Alex's Cantina) This is the alter ego of Pat & Fin (and no Greg) featuring plenty of original hook-filled power pop.

Tim Buley Band (Charlie's) Rocking blues on the beach.

Gino Vannelli (Ventura Theatre) Veteran rock dude plays the old theater.

Matt Schulte & Bill Coffey (Charlie's) Acoustic duo that does folk right. They can sing as well as anyone, and they do mostly originals, but also covers by the Byrds, the Everly Brothers and X.

Das (Eric Ericsson's Fish Co . , 1140 Seaward Ave ., Ventura, 643-4783) This week's happening Sunday night reggae fest.

Charlie Musselwhite (Alexander's, Harbor Boulevard and Spinnaker Drive , Ventura, 658-2000) Award-winning harmonica great headlines, this week's Blue Monday presentation.

Lon Bove (Charlie's) Blues on the beach beginning at 9 p.m. with Schulte & Coffey doing the 6 p.m. Happy Hour set.

Maelstrom (Charlie's) Hard-edged original rock on the beach.

Charlie Musselwhite (Felix's Cantina, 525 State St ., Santa Barbara, 962-1432) Yup, it's him again, except it's Blue Tuesday, 30 miles north.

Pat, Fin & Greg (The Ketch, 514 State St., Santa Barbara, 564-3231) Pop rock comes to the meet market.

Art Carnage (Charlie's) Three guys from Oxnard that know a lot of '60s songs.

Yup, it's only rock and roll, and thus these listings are subject to change. Mom was right--call first.
