SHORT TAKES : Gulf Troops Hear WWII Singer

LONDON — Dame Vera Lynn, the Allied troops' sweetheart in World War II, on Thursday helped entertain soldiers in the Persian Gulf.

A BBC interview with the 73-year-old singer was broadcast Thursday night to 25 million listeners including Royal Air Force crews, Royal Navy ships and the 1st Armored Division in Saudi Arabia.

Dame Vera was known for her wartime tear-jerker "We'll Meet Again" and the "White Cliffs of Dover," a British war anthem.

The interview was broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corp.'s World Service.
