Jordan Complains Key Refugee Route Is Being Bombed

AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan summoned the ambassadors of the United States and other allied countries today to protest the U.S.-led bombing of a main highway between Baghdad and Amman, saying the air raids killed four Jordanian civilians.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Tahar Masri said four Jordanians and an Egyptian national were killed in the raids on the highway inside of Iraq. He also said four trucks carrying oil from Iraq to Jordan were hit by allied bombs today and five were destroyed Tuesday.

Thousands of refugees are using the highway to flee from the war-torn country.

Jordan has officially supported a U.N.-imposed trade embargo against Baghdad, but has continued to receive oil at a low price of $16 a barrel from Iraq, part of the repayment of a debt to the kingdom.
