Movies to Tape

February 03, 1991

Call Her Savage (Channel 56 Monday at 10 a.m.) Clara Bow's 1932 comeback film is pure soap opera, but beyond a doubt demonstrated that the silent era's "It Girl" could be a serious dramatic actress. However, the ill-fated star made only one more film before calling it quits.

The Aviator's Wife (Bravo Monday at 8 p.m., and 1 a.m. Tuesday), Eric Rohmer's contemporary "La Ronde," is a rueful, compassionate and funny observation of anguished emotions from one of France's finest, most distinctive filmmakers.

Public Enemy (Channel 5 Saturday at 2 a.m.) This 1931 gangster classic is raw and sometimes awkward but it put James Cagney--this is the one in which he shoved a grapefruit in Mae Clarke's face--on the map.
