In response to the growing number of parking lot parties involving minors and alcohol, the City Council this week adopted an ordinance prohibiting trespassing on business property after closing hours.
A sign must be posted displaying the ordinance and the hours that the property is closed to the public.
The Police Department has identified the parties as a problem and will use the ordinance to combat them.
"I know most business owners in the city will welcome this," Mayor George Scott said.
"As a member of the drug abuse committee, I've been worried about this issue for years and I am delighted to see it," Councilman John Collins said of the ordinance.
Violations are a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, a six-month jail term or both. Councils in other Orange County cities, including Irvine, have either adopted similar ordinances or are considering them.
