There Should Be Limits on Toddler Saying 'No'

February 10, 1991

As an early childhood educator (retired) and having raised three children who are good at knowing when to say "no," I am moved to caution Eileen Heyes. What she is overlooking is the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

It can be argued that these are in the eye of the beholder, but Heyes would do well to teach this child the limits of his defiance.

Don't bank on it that this child will choose to say "no" to abusers and drugs. He may use these means as further defiance. Don't forget, he's going to be a teen-ager. Stop gloating and start preparing.
