THE WEEK AHEAD

MANAGUA : One Year Later

February 19, 1991

A year after her dramatic upset of President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua's election, President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro finds herself following in his Sandinista footsteps--touring the world looking for money to bail her country out of poverty.

Government officials say how Monday's anniversary will be marked depends on Chamorro's mood when she returns later this week from a fund-raising tour of Japan, Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Germany.

Chamorro's aides expected a gush of Western assistance to more than offset the loss of Nicaragua's Soviet bloc assistance after her inauguration last April. But new aid to help pay off $350 million in foreign debts has been slow in coming.
