BOGOTA : Rebels Turn Politicians

February 26, 1991

Colombia's People's Liberation Army (EPL), a 2,000-strong, leftist guerrilla group that has been fighting since 1967, is to lay down its arms Friday under an accord with the government of President Cesar Gaviria that was signed earlier this month.

The EPL is the third rebel group to make peace with the authorities; a fourth is negotiating. Meanwhile, fighting among the army and Colombia's two biggest guerrilla groups continues.

Like the Revolutionary Workers Party and the April 19 Movement before it, the EPL is expected to reorganize as a peaceful political party.
