Wags To Riches

March 10, 1991

I object to the insipid descriptions that follow the titles of the weekly Best Sellers. These have always seemed sarcastic, rather than informative, or even humorous. Now, however, they are inaccurate.

I refer to the description of "Magic Hour" by Susan Isaacs. ("At that magic time of dawn or dusk, people are getting killed or conceiving children.") "People" are not getting killed; there is only one murder, that of the producer, Sy Spencer, and there may be an affair or two, but not one child is conceived in the entire book, which is a satiric murder mystery, nor is any effort made to do so.

It seems to me that whoever is responsible for summarizing the plots for us either quote the book jacket verbatim or, if it is not too much to ask, read the book.
