After a hike along the newly carved Opal Canyon Trail in Duarte, nature lovers will sit down to finger-licking barbecue while listening to foot-stomping music.
It's the second annual Duarte Family Wilderness Adventure Day, this Saturday.
"This family event is unique, for it incorporates fitness, wilderness skills, hands-on learning about nature, and recreation for all ages," says organizer Lyndel Morgan of the Duarte Parks and Recreation Department.
The California Park and Recreation Society recently honored the city with a first-place award in special events for last year's Family Wilderness Adventure Day.
The day begins at 9 a.m., with a nature walk along Opal Canyon Trail starting at Valley View Park at the top of Mel Canyon Road. The trail winds into the lower canyon leading to Van Tassel Trail, which climbs above the city through chaparral-covered hillsides.
