Alhambra : House Size, Parking Limited

March 28, 1991

In an effort to slow the city's growth, the City Council adopted an urgency ordinance Monday limiting home size and regulating parking in residential areas.

With 82,000 people, Alhambra has reached a population projected for about 15 years from now, Mayor Boyd G. Condie said.

Under the new rules, builders may only build homes with a floor area of 30% to 35% of the lot area, depending on lot size, compared to previous limits of 35% to 40%. The rule applies to single-family and two-house lots. On lots permitting two houses, back houses are limited to 800 square feet; previously, they could have up to 1,250 square feet.

The new rules also require more off-street parking for houses of 2,500 square feet and up and prohibit parking of large commercial vehicles in residential areas.
