Westwood : 6 on UCLA Faculty Honored

Six UCLA faculty members have been elected fellows of the prestigious Council of the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science.

They were among 280 chosen nationwide for 1991.

The UCLA honorees are:

* Robert Coombs, director of the Office of Education at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, an expert on medical education.

* James Lake, professor in the Molecular Biology Institute, who studies the evolution, structure and function of ribosomes.

* Malcolm Nicol, professor of physical chemistry, who studies the chemistry and properties of materials at extremely high pressures.

* Susan Scrimshaw, associate dean of academic programs at the UCLA School of Public Health and professor of anthropology, population and family health, who is an expert on maternal and child health and cultural aspects of health care delivery.

* Donald Treiman, professor of sociology, an expert on social stratification and mobility.

* David A. Wilson, professor of political science, an expert on public policy and organization.

The American Assn. for the Advancement of Science, the nation's leading scientific organization, describes a fellow as "a member whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished."
