Baseball Preview : The Big Men

April 07, 1991

Seldom have Dodger and Angel championship hopes burned brighter than this spring with the arrival of Darryl Strawberry (left) and Dave Parker, two players of exceptional size and talent. A Los Angeles native, Strawberry, at 6 feet 6, 200 pounds, came to the Dodgers as a free agent from the New York Mets, for whom he won rookie of the year honors in 1983 and the National League home run championship in 1988. Parker (6-5, 250 pounds) came to the Angels from Milwaukee where, for the second consecutive year, he was voted the American League's most outstanding designated hitter. Earlier in his distinguished career, while with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Parker won back-to-back NL batting championships (1977-78) and was the league's most valuable player in '78.
