Sentence of Shah's Nephew Is Less Than Law Required

April 14, 1991|Associated Press

TULSA, Okla. — The nephew of the late shah of Iran got a lighter sentence than required by law on charges of possessing a firearm.

Darius Pahlavi Hillyer, 33, was sentenced last week to three years in prison for possessing a firearm after a felony conviction. Federal sentencing guidelines mandate a sentence of at least seven years.

The defense asked the judge to depart from sentencing guidelines, citing the violent atmosphere in which Hillyer was raised as a child in Tehran.

Hillyer had been convicted of armed robbery in 1979 and for pointing a weapon in 1988.
