MILAN, Italy — Loredana Berte, wife of tennis star Bjorn Borg, was hospitalized Wednesday morning after she swallowed barbiturates, apparently in a suicide attempt, Milan police said.
Berte, a 39-year-old Italian rock singer, was out of danger after doctors pumped her stomach, hospital officials in Milan said. She was discovered at about dawn by firefighters who broke down the door of her Milan apartment after being summoned by a servant.
Borg, had been in Monte Carlo, where he was soundly defeated Tuesday in his first match in eight years. Berte had called Italian journalists in Monte Carlo earlier this week to object to the reports that her marriage was in trouble. She apparently was most upset about a photo in a French magazine showing Borg, 34, with an unidentified young woman. Borg said the woman was a journalist.
According to police, Berte said, "I am tired of this life, too many disappointments," as she was driven to the hospital.
