Thaddeus A. Shubsda, 66, Roman Catholic bishop of Monterey who fought to acquire sainthood status for Father Junipero Serra, founder of the historic California missions. Formerly auxiliary bishop of the Los Angeles diocese, Shubsda had headed the 8,500-square-mile Monterey diocese since 1982. He actively tried to improve living conditions for farm workers, mediated Watsonville's frozen food strikes, and spoke out in support of victims of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
