Movies to Tape

June 30, 1991

The Palm Beach Story (Showtime, Monday at 2:30 p.m., again on Friday at 6 a.m.). Scintillating 1942 Preston Sturges screwball comedy classic with Claudette Colbert fleeing husband Joel McCrea and winding up in Florida with rich eccentrics Mary Astor and her brother Rudy Vallee.

Anna Christie (Showtime, Tuesday at 6 a.m.). Greta Garbo made her 1930 talkie debut with this effective (if a trifle stagy) film version of the Eugene O'Neill play; her oft-quoted first line: "Gimme a viskey. Ginger ale on the side. And don' be stingy, ba-bee."

Show Boat (TNT, Thursday at 8:35 p.m.). As part of TNT's Independence Day salute to great American musicals, it is airing a recently restored print of the 1951 MGM version of the Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein musical starring Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel and directed by George Sidney.
