Flash From The Past

July 07, 1991

Jardin El Encanto, one of Monterey Park's historical landmarks, was constructed in 1928 as a meeting hall for residents of a Bel-Air-type development that later failed. During World War II, the Spanish-style building on El Mercado Avenue was converted into a United Service Organizations center. After the war, it was purchased by Cliff and Irene Ostler, who added a kitchen and lived in it for several years. Later, they sold El Encanto to a man who used it as a wedding chapel.
