MEXICO CITY : The Sun Also Disappears

July 09, 1991

The biggest audience for such an event in history is expected to witness the last total solar eclipse of the century Thursday.

Besides the 220 million people who live in the eclipse path, scientists and more than the usual number of tourists have flocked to Hawaii, Mexico, Central America and Brazil for the best view of the phenomenon. Among other places, it will be darkness at midday in Mexico City, the world's second-largest city as the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, temporarily blocking the sun's rays.

The next total eclipse visible in some part of the United States will not occur until the year 2017.
