Compton : Council Denies $210-Million Claim in Death of Brothers

July 11, 1991

A $210-million claim by the family of two brothers shot to death in February by a Compton policeman was unanimously rejected Tuesday by the City Council, clearing the way for the family to pursue its claim in the civil courts.

The family claims that Officer Alfred Skiles used excessive force when he shot Pouvi Tualaulelei, 34, and his brother, Italia, 22, a football player at El Camino College, in the driveway of their home.

Skiles was sent to the house to investigate a domestic dispute reported by the older brother's wife. He said the two brothers tried to take his gun from him. The Police Department and the district attorney's office are investigating the shooting. Results of their investigations are expected to be complete this month.

The shooting drew cries of outrage from Samoans, who held a demonstration demanding that Skiles be tried for murder.
