Israel's Future Clouded by Palestinian Issue

July 21, 1991

James Flanigan's column about the bright economic future of Israel, "Israel's Economic Future Hinges on Top Resource: People" (July 7), is an object lesson in dealing with an unpleasant subject by ignoring it.

Flanigan does not so much as mention the Palestinians, whose violent and nonviolent struggle against occupation has compelled the Israelis to spend much of their energy and treasury in a seemingly endless effort to keep the lid on.

While the Israelis continue to stonewall the Palestinian cry for release from the harsh occupation, Israel will remain a bitterly divided country and a dark shadow will lie across its future.

A United Nations-sponsored conference, which has the support of most of the world, could free Israel and the Palestinians to each pursue their own destinies.
