Police Ease Vigil at Abortion Clinics

August 02, 1991|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Police and U.S. marshals withdrew from the gates of abortion clinics in Wichita, Kan., as abortion protesters apparently abided by a federal judge's order keeping the clinics open. The protesters' primary target has been Dr. George Tiller, the operator of Women's Health Care Services, a clinic where late-term abortions are performed for women referred by doctors across the nation. Nearly 1,400 arrests have been made since the protests began July 22.
