Willie Brown

August 04, 1991

Brown says that managing the state's budget has been his proudest achievement ("Grandmaster of Compromise," by Daniel M. Weintraub and Jerry Gillam, June 23). How can anyone be proud of a budget that was more than $14 billion out of balance? The authors write that "Brown today still speaks fondly of having crafted a reform of the state Medi-Cal program" but point out that this legislation has led to the denial of basic medical care for several hundred thousand "working poor." These statements make sense when you see that Brown looks to the Assembly for his position, with such words (in "The Flash") as "as long as you administer to the (Assembly) membership."

When are Brown and the rest of the Assembly going to compromise their own reelections and pet projects in favor of us taxpayers and the fiscal health of our great state?
