103 Vehicles to Be Tested Using Alternative Fuels

More than 100 test vehicles powered by six alternative fuels will soon be operating throughout the Los Angeles Basin, air quality district officials said Monday.

Norton Younglove, chairman of the South Coast Air Quality Management District's board, said it will be "the most comprehensive alternative fuels project to date in terms of the multiple fuels and numbers of vehicles involved, as well as because of sponsorship by a coalition of government agencies and private industry representatives."

The demonstration will provide information on vehicle operations, emissions and economics for compressed natural gas, electricity, ethanol blends, liquefied petroleum gas, methanol and a new reformulated gasoline, Younglove said. The 103 test vehicles will begin operating this fall for two years and will be used by Federal Express.
