August 11, 1991|LEONARD FEATHER

*** Rebecca Coupe Franks, "Suit of Armor," Justice. Franks plays muted, early Miles Davis trumpet on the title track, but uses open horn on most of the others, all but two of which she composed. Though occasionally unsure of herself, she is clearly inspired by the company of New York's finest--among them Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Kenny Barron (piano) and Buster Williams (bass)--on the aptly titled "No Gimmicks, Please."
