JERUSALEM — Ultra-Orthodox Jews have voluntarily joined the Israeli army for the first time in the history of the Jewish state, Israel television said Sunday.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews are exempt from the mandatory three years of military service for 18-year-old Israeli men so that they can study in religious seminaries.
