October 11, 1991|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Housing Minister Ariel Sharon, an outspoken opponent of U.S. efforts to convene a Mideast peace conference, has announced he will seek nomination by the Likud Party for prime minister. Sharon also is a leading proponent of Jewish settlements in Arab East Jerusalem and the occupied territories. "I am not speaking of running against someone, but about a challenge for us to conduct proper policy," said Sharon, 63, who would be seeking to unseat Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir in national elections expected by November, 1992. Shamir leads the right-wing Likud.
